CRAVE Theatre COMPANY

BRINGING FRESH EYES TO CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY PLAYS

Sober Actors Performing New Interpretations of Established Plays

The Plays

Our Recovery-Informed Theatre Company is committed to producing full length productions of classical and contemporary plays. We aim to give our actors a chance to explore texts and characters that challenge them to both refine their acting skills and develop their reflective, recovery-engaged artistic process.

Our plays are always established texts, not devised, but will usually be related to themes of addiction in all its forms. We aim to produce at least three plays per year and our company members will be in rehearsals throughout the year in preparation for these.

The Actors

Company members are required to be in stable recovery from addiction or committed to long-term sobriety, and should have some prior experience of performance training or of professional acting.

Our refresher classes and public productions are an opportunity for our actors to re-engage with acting or performance, having been previously absent due to alcohol or substance abuse issues. They are intended as a bridge for actors and creatives to enter a sober community focused on performance, with the possibility offered to re-enter the acting business should they wish to.

The Benefits

The shared lived experience of our actors and creative teams mean that you will be given a welcoming and supportive re-introduction to theatre life. At CRAVE THEATRE we are committed to building a sustained company and community of recovering actors, who want to showcase their skills and abilities to the public, and to industry professionals.

Through elevated representation and visibility of openly sober actors in the industry, and increased promotion of the benefits of sobriety, we aim to continually challenge stigmas around those who have experienced issues with alcohol or drugs.

The Opportunities

We also encourage entrance into the performing company any actors who have undertaken sufficient acting classes within the CRAVE STUDIO programme, and who have aspirations to become professional actors in the future.

Our mission is to provide a platform for anyone in recovery to access professional actor training and the acting industry.

Professional Refresher Classes

Our qualified acting tutors and coaches provide regular refresher classes for
sober actors in various techniques at our studio and online.

Alongside regular weekly refresher classes in acting we will also offer a series of masterclasses exploring fresh and challenging acting methodologies specifically aligned to benefit those with a history of substance or alcohol misuse.

ANONYMITY

Whilst we promote and celebrate sobriety within the acting profession, our company has been formed from a recovery background where anonymity is often prioritised. We understand therefore that there is a balance to be struck between these two positions, where our actors might be transitioning from early sobriety towards potential public performance.

Whilst there are zero expectations for our actors to perform publicly, those who do wish to are more than welcome to participate anonymously. They might choose to use a first name only, or perform under a stage name different to their own. Photographs of actors who wish to remain anonymous can also be omitted from promotional material and programmes at the actors request.

If our actors wish to move towards finding professional acting representation or to liaise with casting directors at any time, any correspondence with agents or industry professionals can be undertaken by the actor themselves, or by the theatre company depending on the actor's preference.

If you have any further queries as to how we can assist you with maintaining your anonymity please contact us

Please note: The work undertaken at CRAVE THEATRE is NOT intended or recommended as a recovery tool for people who are still drinking or using who wish to get clean or sober. Nor are our teachers professional recovery workers or counsellors.
