CRAVE COMPANY
BRINGING FRESH EYES TO CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY PLAYS
Sober Actors Performing New Interpretations of Established Plays
The Plays
Our Recovery-Informed Theatre Company is committed to producing full length productions of classical and contemporary plays that give our actors a chance to explore texts and characters that challenge them to both refine their acting skills and develop their reflective artistic process.
The plays performed may be either classical or contemporary, and could be a piece completely unrelated to substance abuse, one that addresses those themes directly, or a piece that requires an adaptation in order to do so. We aim to produce at least three plays per year and our company members will be in rehearsals throughout the year in preparation for these.
The Actors
The Company is intended for people who are in recovery from addiction or committed to long-term sobriety, who already have some prior experience of performance training or of professional acting.
Our refresher classes and public productions are an opportunity for actors who previously dis-engaged with acting or performance due to alcohol or substance abuse issues, to reconnect with the acting process. They are intended as a bridge for people to enter a sober community focused on performance, with the possibility offered to re-enter the acting business should they wish to.
The Benefits
The shared lived experience of our actors and creative teams mean that you will be given a welcoming and supportive re-introduction to theatre life. At CRAVE THEATRE we are committed to building a sustained company and community of recovering actors, who are able to showcase their skills and abilities to the public and to industry professionals.
Through elevated representation and visibility of openly sober actors in the industry, and increased promotion of the benefits of sobriety, we aim to continually challenge stigmas around those who have experienced issues with alcohol or drugs.
ANONYMITY
Whilst we promote and celebrate sobriety within the acting profession, our company has been formed from both a professional acting and recovery background, where anonymity is often prioritised. We understand therefore that there may be a balance to be struck between these while our actors transition from early sobriety towards performing to the public should they wish to do so.
There are no expectations for our actors to automatically want to perform publicly when with us, they are more than welcome to participate in refresher classes. However, actors within the company who do wish to perform, are more than welcome to participate anonymously, use a first name only, or perform under a stage name different to their own if they wish to do so. This name could also be registered with Spotlight if they have sufficient previous credits or accreditation. Photographs of actors who wish to remain anonymous can also be omitted from promotional material and programmes at the actors request.
If our actors wish to move towards finding professional acting representation or want to liaise with casting directors at any time, any correspondence with agents or industry professionals can be undertaken by the actor themselves or by the theatre company depending on the actor's preference.
Professional Refresher Classes
Our qualified acting tutors and coaches will provide regular refresher classes in various techniques at our for previously trained participants who have had a break from performance
Alongside regular weekly refresher classes in acting we will also offer a series of masterclasses exploring fresh and challenging acting methodologies specifically aligned to benefit those with a history of substance or alcohol misuse.
